University of Manitoba Steadicam

I think I just saw the end result of the extra income from raised tuition at a press conference today.

If the paper raises subscription fees I wonder if we could get one of those...

Citizenship Court at Glenlawn

Went to take photos of around 60 people who gained their citizenship today. There was a little girl at the front that was right into the whole occasion. She waved the little paper flag around like she was in a parade.

Everyone should have to sit through one of these events. It makes you feel proud to be Canadian to see the happiness in the room.

Face Painting Fun At FortWhyte

Earth Day at FortWhyte was really fun if a little chilly.

Face painting (Hello Kitty), bracelet making and fishing for bugs.

Cool!

Looks like a quiet spot

Looks like a quite spot, originally uploaded by mdcellphoto.

But only a few hours ago it was the scene of an unfortunate accident. We hope it was an accident. Still waiting to hear from the police on whether a young person died playing a stupid dare game or deliberately did themselves in.

If you haven't forgotten there's a flood outside

Today I got to meet a really nice Manitoban who took me out to his house in Southern Manitoba. I made sure I took the opportunity to put my chest waders on. I wish I had a dry suit because I could not get to the spot I wanted to, the water got too deep! Anyway it was a blast and an opportunity to meet someone who is making a difference in his community which is mostly underwater. The story won't run for a few days so that's as much as I can say for now.

Funerals are amongst the least favourite assignments to cover. No one wants you there. Emotions can be very high and sometimes people yell at you.

Today the media is set up across the street and all is quite.

A house in danger of loosing its dike

A limestone road is rebult after the previous access road was washed away today at this house on Turnbull Drive.

An engineer will be arriving shortly to determine whether the earth dike that surrounds the house can be saved. If not the house will be lost when the river erodes it.

Less Than Kind

Was on the set of the show today as they started principal shooting for season two.

Really nice people and it looked like they were having a great time.

I've only seen half of an episode, but it seems like a very funny show.

In Too Deep?

The problem with following someone in chest-waders is you kind of end up too far off the path.

Our walk in the forest today was great fun even if it felt like I was going to slip and fall every thirty feet.

Floodway Gates were not completely raised today

Just went to shoot my project thing and noticed that the water level was up significantly since yesterday just inside the gates. My reference point is the clay dike around that last house. Yesterday the water was down 2-3 feet. Now its back up possibly past the high water mark from the day before.

They are still restricting access, but they let me in. Maybe it cause I'm there everyday.

Taken from the St. Mary's road bridge over the floodway. Noticed the animal tracks in the ice.

Floodway Gates Open With Almost No Notice #flood09

Was almost redirected to a late morning assignment to get a pic of Christine Melnik looking at the ice close to the St. Mary bridge over the floodway. We decided that there was no need of another pic of her looking at flood preparation. Our mistake it turned into a presser about the sudden decision to open the gates. Oops.

I got there about an hour after they started the procedure and did my project thing first. Lots of people. It was a good thing that I had started talking to the owner of the house whose dike I was standing on a few weeks ago. They are actively chasing people off the property.

Then I went up onto the gates bridge and maybe got something for A1. I wasn't sure when I left the office.

I drove south on Red River Rd to St. Adolphe and back up 200 taking pics along the way. My last stop was at the St. Mary's bridge that goes over the floodway. They were clearing away big chunks of ice from the banks of the floodway.
