Massive weight taken off my shoulders...
For over a year I thought I was occasionally miss-focusing my 16-35mm lens and for some reason I was too paranoid about the fact that I might be wrong and would sound like I was making excuses... well I just did a side-by-side test and this is what I saw: shot at iso 8000, 1/125 at f3.5 with a +1/3 stop exposure setting. I focused on the top left corner of the red poster. Guess the lens is going back to Canon.
